Brooke Belisle studies the history and theory of media aesthetics. She is an editor of the Journal of Visual Culture, and directs a certificate in Media, Art, Culture, and Technology at Stony Brook University, where she teaches in the Department of Art. Her research focuses on phenomenological approaches to experimental and hybrid visual formats--from the panorama and stereoscope to VR and AI. Most recently, she is comparing how dimensionality was expressed in emergent 19th century media (photography and cinema) with ways it is algorithmically constructed in computer vision. Belisle holds degrees from Berkeley, NYU, and Princeton and her work has been supported by long term fellowships from the Getty Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, and American Council of Learned Societies.
